From a small venture with RM2000 to a billion-ringgit empire, Dato’ Haji Ramly bin Mokni’s story of building Ramly Burger is one of wisdom, perseverance, and dedication.
Humble Beginnings,The Initial Spark
Dato’ Haji Ramly bin Mokni was born in Tanjung Piandang, Perak, as the eighth child among 16 siblings. Growing up in a poor family, he developed a strong work ethic and determination. These qualities would later become crucial in his entrepreneurial journey.
After graduating, Ramly moved to Kuala Lumpur and found a job as a meat cutter in a supermarket. It was there that he noticed that most burger patties in the market were not suitable for Muslims. This realization sparked his idea to create halal-certified burger patties to provide safe and healthy options for the Muslim community.
Early Challenges
In 1978, with only RM2000 in savings, Ramly and his wife Shala started their business. Due to limited funds, they manually produced 200 burger patties a day. Despite slow initial sales, they persisted, continuously improving the product to meet market demands.
Establishing the Brand
To promote their product, Ramly set up a small burger stall on Chow Kit Road in Kuala Lumpur. Their dedication paid off as customers began appreciating the taste and quality of their patties. Daily production increased from 200 to 3000 patties, leading to the official establishment of Ramly Group in 1980.
Expanding Operations
With growing demand, Ramly established a 100,000-square-foot factory in Taman Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, increasing daily production to 10,000 patties. He also diversified the product line to include sausages, chicken nuggets, and minced meat, which were distributed to supermarkets and convenience stores nationwide.
Going Global,A National Icon
In 2018, Ramly opened a third, larger factory in Pulau Indah, Selangor, with a daily production capacity of 1 million patties. By 2019, the company’s annual sales reached RM1 billion. Ramly’s products also entered international markets, including Singapore, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Bangladesh.
Ramly Burger has become a staple of Malaysian street food. Its affordable and delicious burgers are found in cities and towns across the country and are even enjoyed by tourists. The sizzling sounds and enticing aroma of Ramly burgers have made it a beloved brand, earning the title of “National Burger.”
