HTC’s XR Team Joins Google in a Major Deal

(Taipei, 23rd) HTC has officially signed an agreement with Google, marking a significant shift in its XR strategy. Under this deal, a portion of HTC’s XR development team will transfer to Google, and HTC will grant a non-exclusive license for its XR intellectual property. In return, Google will pay $250 million (approximately RM1.11 billion) to advance the XR ecosystem. The agreement is expected to be finalized in the first quarter of this year.

HTC stated that this collaboration will help refine its strategic positioning in the XR market. Moving forward, HTC plans to optimize its product portfolio, focus on next-generation platforms, and improve operational efficiency to enhance financial flexibility. Despite transferring part of its XR team to Google, HTC reaffirmed its dedication to the XR industry. The company will continue investing in VIVE XR solutions and expanding its presence in the virtual reality (VR) ecosystem. Additionally, HTC plans to explore new opportunities in artificial intelligence (AI) and the metaverse, positioning itself at the forefront of innovation in immersive technology.

Google’s Push for Android XR Development

For Google, this agreement represents a major step toward advancing its Android XR platform. With HTC’s expertise, Google aims to accelerate the development of headsets and smart glasses, further strengthening its position in the XR industry.

Google Expands Its Presence in Taiwan

As part of this deal, HTC’s XR team members will join Google, contributing to the company’s growing research and development hub in Taiwan. This move aligns with Google’s broader strategy, as the company previously announced a partnership with Qualcomm and Samsung to co-develop an Android XR platform. With plans to release a new headset in 2024, Google is solidifying its investment in the future of XR technology.
